Lonely Planet Central Africa (Lonely Planet Travel Survival Kit)
Published in Paperback by Lonely Planet (January, 1994)
Average review score:

A great achievement, not up-to-date but still the best.Central Africa is almost undoubtedly the least touristic, among the inhabited region of our Planet - and unfortunately so, for it offers wonders that few other parts of the world can offer. You can paddle a canoe down a junge river for weeks on end, hunt with the Pygmies, climb an active volcano, come face-to-face with a mountain gorilla, trek through the snow-capped Mountains of the Moon, join a search for white rhinos, dance all night to Congo music, have a bath on the unique beaches of São Tomé & Principe... Due to the very limited touristic facilities of the region, it would appear that Lonely Planet has never re-printed this 1994 edition of the guidebook, nor published a new one. This is why, despite the fact that the book is clearly well out of date, it surely remains the best guide to the region. Its advice on hotels and restaurants may no longer be perfect, but its wide sections on culture and society, its maps, its general advice, remain irreplaceable tools for the traveler.

Long Green Line
Published in Paperback by Medalist Sports (June, 1968)
Average review score:

A Classic of Inspiration and Motivation! The York High School Cross Country program has had unparalleled success through the years. This book chronicles his program as it was in the 1960's. It is amazing how much of it is relavent today. The chapters are short, inspirational and full of ideas. There are those that have criticized Mr. Newton for going overboard, and working his athletes too hard. The demands he places on his kids ARE HIGH. I own a dog eared copy of this book that I purchased after I heard Coach Newton speak. If you coach the sport, participate in the sport or , simply, love the sport find a copy of this CLASSIC and treasure it!

Looking Forever Young: A Dermatologist's Guide to Healthy Skin Care
Published in Hardcover by Heritage Pub (January, 1996)
Average review score:

Fantastic book -- I love itThis is a fantastic, informative text on everything from age spots to zits. Well-written and cleverly presented, it's easy-to-read yet thorough. The brand name recommendations are great when it comes time to actually putting the advice into practice. It's also nice as a quick reference with practical, do-it-yourself solutions. It dispells many of the myths associated with skin care as well as providing many tips that you probably don't know. An all around excellent value

Lorca, una escritura en trance. 'Libro de poemas' y 'Divan del Tamarit' (Purdue University Monographs in the Romance Languages)

Luxembourg and Letzebuergesch: Language and Communication at the Crossroads of Europe
Published in Hardcover by Clarendon Pr (June, 1996)
Average review score:

Excellent book !This is an excellent book for anyone curious about the native language of Luxembourg, and how it relates to use of other languages there like French, German, Dutch/Flemish. Great information which is difficult to find elsewhere, especially for anyone not living in Luxembourg. Good for linguists - may be too dry for those not interested in linguistics, specifically historical linguistics or dialectology. This book also would be good for anyone doing genealogical research with significant links to Luxembourg.

Margaret Mead Made Me Gay: Personal Essays, Public Ideas (Series Q)
Published in Library Binding by Duke Univ Pr (Txt) (December, 2000)
Average review score:

Her Own Best InformantEsther Newton is an extremely gifted thinker and writer. She points up important issues for gender studies in a clear and compelling, and still quite groundbreaking, style. This book works very diligently and successfully at several levels: as a historical narrative of the trajectory of Newton's life and career; as a theoretical discourse which is situated specifically by her historical narrative; as a critique of and a profound contribution to her profession, anthropology; as a powerful argument for the inevitable relationship between theory and history; as a courageous and provocative piece of scholarship.
Many of these essays were written early in the second wave of feminism, so the issues they engage point up the degree to which Newton has been ahead of her time. That she narrativizes the essays as the historical life of an academic (herself) attests to the fact that she is still ahead of her time: everything-- political, academic, social, sexual--is lived. There are no categories which happen outside of the people who make them.
Because of Newton's autobiographical, comfortable style, it should be noted that the book, although clearly academic, is a fairly easy read.

Mass Murder: An Annotated Bibliography (Garland Reference Library of Social Science, Vol 427)
Published in Hardcover by Garland Pub (November, 1987)
Average review score:

An Excellent Starting PointAs an undergraduate, I had spent a lot of time in libraries searching indexes for individual books, journal articles, and other periodicals! One day in a used book store, I found a copy of this book. What a find! Not only did it include a bibliography of individual murderers but also other resources from psychology and criminology. Anyone who is able to get a copy will find it very valuable! I can only hope that Michael Newton will put together a newer version in the near future.

The McCully report : the Russo-Japanese War, 1904-05
Published in Unknown Binding by Naval Institute Press ()
Average review score:

Only extant eyewitness account of Russian side of naval war.I am the editor of the McCully Report, and published it in 1967 through the Naval Institute Press. I located the report among the Navy's records at the National Archives and Records Administration. The original report was two volumes and included about 200 photographs and line drawings submitted by McCully as part of his intelligence report. These illustrations were not included with the publication, but may be viewed with the original report.
